Lenders to export-oriented firms may face losses – Danish governor

Nødgaard also recommends that banks improve their cyber defence plans

Banks in Denmark that lend to export-focused firms may face losses this year, the governor of the country’s central bank has warned.

Ulrik Nødgaard told the Association of Local Banks, Savings Banks and Co-operative Banks in Denmark on May 15 that mid-sized lenders were “especially exposed” as their new business loans included a “higher share of clients flagged as risky by other banks”.

He said that although banks had not seen a rise in non-performing loans in 2024 – and their incomes had grown
