Different housing markets are shaped by patterns of population growth, senior economist says

Australia has no single housing market but rather several that are each shaped differently by patterns of population growth, the Reserve Bank of Australia’s Alexandra Heath said today (July 5).

The head of the bank’s economic analysis department told an event in Wollongong that a variety of demographic factors had affected regional markets. Housing has been a key focus for the RBA recently as some markets have shown signs of overheating.

In broad terms, “natural” population growth has slowed
