Digital financial services reducing the number of people unbanked in Malawi, says governor

The number of bank accounts in Malawi has surged by 64% so far this year, the governor of the central bank announced on August 24.

According to Dalitso Kabambe, the number of bank accounts increased from 1.3 million in January to 2.13 million at the end of June. “This implies that more people are now banked,” Kabambe said.

The increase in account numbers comes at a time the Reserve Bank of Malawi is pushing banks to invest in digital financial services.

Kabambe said more than 102 billion
