Eurozone payment systems not ready for quantum – research

Bank of Italy paper calls for more robust cryptographic algorithms and quantum roadmaps from suppliers

The Eurosystem’s payment infrastructure needs upgrades if it is to withstand future attacks from quantum computers, new research from the Bank of Italy warns.

Authors Luca Buccella and Stefano Massi investigate the cryptographic mechanisms underlying the Eurosystem’s Target2, Target2-Securities and Target instant payment settlement (Tips) systems in their paper, published on September 29.

They explain that although quantum computing is only likely to become a threat over the coming decade
