HKMA awards Hong Kong’s first stablecoin licences

HSBC and Standard Chartered-backed JV to mint HKD-denominated assets from mid-2026

HSBC and a joint venture backed by Standard Chartered Bank were awarded Hong Kong’s first stablecoin issuance licences today (April 10), eight months after the territory implemented regulations for the digital assets.

The Hong Kong Monetary Authority (HKMA) granted the licences to HSBC and Anchorpoint – a joint venture between Standard Chartered Bank (Hong Kong), Hong Kong Telecom, and blockchain technology firm Animoca Brands. HKMA deputy chief executive Darryl Chan said at a press conference
