Bank of Korea’s Rhee says CBDC may be used to distribute government subsidies

South Korea’s central bank is planning to revive its central bank digital currency pilot programme to facilitate government subsidy payments.

The Bank of Korea suspended its CBDC pilot programme in July amid uncertainties surrounding the future of digital asset regulations in the country. However, BoK governor Rhee Chang-yong said on August 28 that he had discussed the idea of using CBDCs to issue government subsidies with the country’s finance minister Koo Yun-cheol, according to a media report
