Digital yen is not a given, says BoJ official

Japan’s central bank is focused on studying CBDCs but does not feel pressure to issue one

The Bank of Japan has not decided whether to introduce a central bank digital currency and does not feel any pressure to do so, a BoJ official tells Central Banking.

More than 90% of central banks were exploring some form of CBDC last year, according to a recent survey by the Bank for International Settlements. A third of those institutions were accelerating their digital currency work in response to the rise of stablecoins and other crypto assets.
