Southern African countries consider joining SADC-RTGS

Mauritius, Tanzania, Zambia and Zimbabwe could onboard their currencies

The Southern African Development Community (SADC) is looking to expand the number of currencies in its real-time gross settlement system (RTGS) as part of efforts to enhance regional financial integration and reduce dependence on currencies from outside the bloc.

A spokesperson for the South Africa Reserve Bank (Sarb), which operates the SADC-RTGS, tells Central Banking that Mauritius, Tanzania, Zambia and Zimbabwe are considering onboarding their currencies, potentially by the end of 2027. The
