
East Africa governors discuss delayed single currency launch
Leaders adopt “masterplan” to modernise and integrate payments systems

Central bank governors from countries in the East Africa Community (EAC) held their first meeting to discuss a single currency since plans for the scheme were put on hold in 2023.
The governors of the central banks of Burundi, Kenya, Rwanda, Somalia, South Sudan, Tanzania and Uganda attended the meeting of the EAC’s monetary affairs committee on May 9 in Mombasa.
