The National Bank of Moldova is to digitise international motor insurance certificates from January 1, 2025.

The bank said it was switching to a digital solution to make purchasing insurance policies easier and to increase the certificates’ level of security.

The transition from paper to digital will take place in two stages. Between November 1 and December 31, the digital “green card”, also known as the international motor insurance certificate, will also have to be printed on paper. From January 1, motorists will be able to only carry the digital version.

The green card provides a guarantee for the country a driver is visiting. It stipulates that the driver’s insurer will reimburse anyone whose vehicle has been damaged by the foreign national’s vehicle in accordance with that country’s rules.

International motor insurance organisation Cob had announced on February 9 that drivers would be allowed to show their green cards as PDF files on their mobile devices.

The central bank said all policies issued until November 1 on paper would remain valid until their date of expiry.
