MAS’s Menon urges careful calibration of Basel III

Managing director concerned over impact on SME and trade finance

The Basel Committee on Banking Supervision should not impose higher capital requirements on banks as it adjusts the final calibration of Basel III, Ravi Menon said on July 11.

The Monetary Authority of Singapore managing director stressed the importance of not over-capitalising banks in a speech at the San Francisco Fed. The current capital levels are "more or less right" he said, warning anything more could cut credit and damage the real economy.
