EBA lays out policy options to deal with NPLs

Countries should consider formation of ‘bad banks’, possibly with public support, EBA argues

Legal systems in Europe need reforms to speed up the process of dealing with non-performing loans (NPLs), among a host of other measures, the European Banking Authority (EBA) said on July 22.

The EBA findings came in a report on European NPLs based on a sample of 166 banks from across the European Union and Norway. In particular, the EBA said policy-makers should consider allowing countries to form state-backed "bad banks".
