World Bank cancels Barcelona conference

SPAIN - The World Bank has decided to suspend its Annual Bank Conference on Development Economics (ABCDE) in Europe, due to be held in Barcelona on June 25-27, to avoid protests from anti-capitalist groups that had stated their intention to disrupt the meeting.

"A conference on poverty reduction should take place in a peaceful atmosphere free from heckling, violence and intimidation," said Bank spokeswoman Caroline Anstey. "It is time to take a stand against this kind of threat to free
