Union threatens Bank of Spain over branch closure

SPAIN - UGT, the Spanish union, has threatened to take the Bank of Spain to court and sue over the plan to close 30 branches of the central bank.

Jose Antonio Mozo, UGT head at the Bank of Spain, says the agreement concluded last week for the closure of these branches by 2004 violates the rights of the 400 workers in Spain who have to be transferred, or take early retirement.

Mr Mozo says that there is a hidden obligatory aspect to the agreement, since if 95 per cent of those aged over 60 and 80
