Iran's money laundering bill in final stages

The deputy Governor of Central Bank of Iran (CBI) said that money laundering should be eliminated from Iran's financial system through conducting training workshops for professionals.
Akbar Komeijani, who was speaking on the sidelines of an antimoney laundering seminar, told IRNA with the finalization of the bill on money laundering, policy-makers and other officials will have a legal device at their disposal to initiate court cases.
Iran should formulate a money laundering law, he said adding, many international organizations including the UN have passed explicit declarations instructing member countries to seriously clamp down on dirty money and enact laws for this purpose.
"Events of September 11, 2001 in the US have sped up the process of passing money laundering bills in many countries," Komeijani underscored.
He said Iran has taken constructive measures by holding seminars and workshops and drawing on other countries' experiences in dealing with money laundering.
"The bill's broad outlines have been approved in the relevant Majlis commissions," the CBI official underlined. He further said that Iran is in regular contact with the International Monetary Fund (IMF), several officials of which are taking part in the seminar.
Meanwhile, last month the Minister of Economy and Finance Tahmasb Mazaheri assured the opponents of the bill on money laundering that the bill has neither been forced on Iran nor drafted by other countries.
"If approved, the bill will be beneficial for the economy," Mazaheri added. He told IRNA that the bill will strengthen investment security, reform the economy and garner adequate financial resources.
