One in six central banks is being recapitalised
Process is “not as smooth as we would want it to be”, benchmark respondent says
Nearly one in six central banks that responded to the Governance Benchmarks 2026 is in the process of being recapitalised, or was recapitalised within the past 12 months.
Nine of the 63 central banks that supplied data in this area (14.3%) say they have “been recapitalised or started the process of recapitalisation” in the past 12 months. While the majority are not being recapitalised, the result emphasises that central banks often do face capital shortfalls and many ask the government to fill
