AI impact and usage growing in central bank economics departments

Regional variation exists, but adoption is increasing across the board

The Economics Benchmarks 2026 show that economics departments at central banks are feeling the impact of artificial intelligence more than ever. They are also increasingly adopting the technology themselves.

The portion of economics departments that say there is “little impact” on their work from AI is the lowest it has ever been, and some are saying – for the first time since the question was introduced in 2023 – that it now has a “major impact”.
