Geopolitics is fastest-rising research topic for economists

Research economists are most widely judged on their output of papers

Geopolitics was the fastest-rising research focus for central bank economics teams between 2024 and 2026, data from the Economics Benchmarks 2026 shows.

Economists rated the research topics that are of importance to their jurisdictions. While geopolitical risk received a mid-level score of 3.9 out of a possible five, it saw the biggest increase of any topic included in the benchmarks, a rise of 0.6 percentage points from 2024.
