Third of economics departments say staffing ‘barely sufficient’

Forecasting, policy analysis and research are economists’ top duties

Central bank economists are more content with their non-staff resources than levels of staffing, with many saying team strength is “barely sufficient”, the Economics Benchmarks 2026 find.

Thirty economics departments provided ratings for the adequacy levels of their staffing and non-staff resources. The grading employed a scoring scale of 1 (very insufficient) to 5 (very sufficient). The scores for staff sufficiency average 3.5, while non-staff resource sufficiency received an average score of 3
