ECB launches Pontes and prepares to invest in tokenised securities
Bundesbank onboarded as market participant to trade tokenised assets settled in central bank money
The European Central Bank went live today (September 21) with its solution to settle digital assets using central bank money in wholesale markets.
Under Pontes, digital assets can be settled using cash tokens on the Eurosystem’s distributed ledger technology or directly via its T2 real-time gross settlement system.
ECB president Christine Lagarde said the new infrastructure was designed to create a “more integrated, innovative and resilient European financial market in the digital age”.
