DNB fines ABN Amro €8.5m for AML shortcomings

Former ECB supervisory board member says penalty signals seriousness of breach

The Dutch central bank has fined ABN Amro €8.5 million ($9.7 million) for “serious shortcomings” in its anti-money laundering controls.

In a statement today (July 9), the Netherlands Bank (DNB) said it had identified shortcomings in ABN Amro’s ongoing monitoring of some of its “high-risk customers” between September 2023 and September 2024.

DNB said its enforcement approach involved ensuring compliance with the Netherlands’ anti-money laundering and anti-terrorist financing act. This, it said
