Bolivia’s central bank rejects claim of plot to loot its assets

Mining union leader made allegation amid widening anti-government unrest

The Central Bank of Bolivia has rejected claims by the leader of a mining union that the government was plotting to loot the institution. 

In a video posted on social media on May 17, Andrés Paye, the leader of the Bolivian Mining Workers’ Union Federation (FSTMB), claimed president Rodrigo Paz’s administration was planning on looting assets held at the central bank. In a statement the following day, the central bank described the claims as “insidious, malicious and completely false”.
