Non-executive directors earn five times less than governors

Central bank non-executive directors (NEDs) earn a fifth of governors’ annual salary on average, though they typically also work fewer hours, the Governance Benchmarks 2026 find.
Non-executive directors’ salaries average $45,614 a year across 26 central banks that supplied information. The salaries range from $3,360 to $202,184 a year. Governors’ average annual salary is more than four times higher than the figure for NEDs at $246,870, an 81.5% difference from the directors’ average pay.
