Governors of smaller central banks earn slightly below global average

But governors’ salaries remain above $200,000 a year

Governors serving in smaller central banks tend to earn slightly less than colleagues in larger institutions, the Governance Benchmarks 2026 show. 

Central bank sizes are judged by the value of respondents’ overall staff strength which averages 1,346 staff. Respondents with a workforce size over that figure are denoted as larger central banks, while jurisdictions with staffing numbers below the mean value are considered smaller central banks. 

Governors’ annual salaries average $233,506 among 26
