Counterfeit notes continued to decline in Europe in 2025

ECB records ‘one of the lowest levels’, though Belgium, Cyprus and Czech Republic see uptick

The number of fake banknotes in Europe has declined over 2025 compared with previous years, the continent’s central banks have reported.

The European Central Bank along with central banks of Austria, Belgium, the Czech Republic, Cyprus, Estonia, Finland, Germany, the Netherlands and Portugal have all released statistics on counterfeiting over the past week.
