Rates round-up: African central banks hold steady

Mauritius, Namibia, Uganda and Zambia leave policy unchanged, while Kenya cuts

Five African central banks announced rates decisions this week, with most keeping borrowing costs unchanged.

Kenya

The Central Bank of Kenya on August 12 lowered its policy rates by 25 basis points to 9.5%. This was the seventh consecutive cut by the bank, which brought policy down from 13% in July of last year.

Headline inflation was 4.1% last month, up from 3.8% in June but within the bank’s 2.5–7.5% target range.

In a statement, the bank’s governor Kamau Thugge said overall inflation was expected
