Estonian board nominates deputy governor to lead central bank

Candidate must now undergo three months of background checks by security service

The board of Estonia’s central bank has nominated one of the bank’s deputy governors to take over when Ardo Hansson steps down as governor on June 6.

The Bank of Estonia’s supervisory board voted in a secret ballot for Madis Müller on February 12, it announced. If appointed, Müller would serve one non-renewable seven-year term.

Estonia’s Internal Security Service will now carry out three months of background checks on Müller, the board said in a statement. If the board approves of the results
