Morauta says central bank has become “inanimate puppet” of Peter O’Neill’s government

A former governor of the Bank of Papua New Guinea has criticised the institution’s current leadership for “printing money for the government”, in an article on his personal blog.

Mekere Morauta, who was governor of the central bank between 1992 and 1996, said the central bank had “irresponsibly” been financing the nation’s deficit in an attempt to “cover up and facilitate” prime minister Peter O’Neill’s “waste and mismanagement”.
