Viola Desmond to appear on a new Canadian banknote
Civil rights activist Viola Desmond will feature on the new Canadian $10, which will be printed in 2018, finance minister Bill Morneau announced today (December 8).
Selected from a shortlist of five 'notable' Canadian women, Desmond – a leading figure in the civil rights movement of Canada – was chosen by the minister after a long selection process.
"Today is a historic day. We will always remember this day," said Bank of Canada governor Stephen Poloz.
The selection of Desmond was the final step
