In March 2011, researchers from the Georg-August University Göttingen and the Centre for European Studies presented the results of a discussion paper on the question ‘Has the financial crisis eroded citizens’ trust in the European Central Bank?’ The authors used panel data from 1999–2011 and found that in the aftermath of the financial crisis trust in the European Central Bank (ECB) had reached a historic low. During the pre-crisis period, citizens’ trust in the ECB was driven by economic growth
