PBOC's Zhou sees 10% economic growth

China's economy will expand at least 10 pct in the second quarter and in full year 2006, despite measures designed to cool the economy, the Wall Street Journal cited People's Bank of China Governor Zhou Xiaochuan as saying.

Speaking on the sidelines of a meeting of central bankers in Basel, Switzerland, Zhou said second quarter growth "will probably be quite high, more than 10 pct," adding that full year growth would be "something around 10 pct." The paper quoted Zhou as saying that China didn't want to risk an economic slowdown.

"We have to try and keep growth stable and sustainable, not deliberately repress the potential of economic growth. China is still a developing country. We are trying to strike a balance between economic growth and stability," he was cited as saying.

"The domestic equilibrium, domestic stability and currency stability is always, I think, more important than our international considerations. But this is by no means to say that we underestimate the importance of the global economy," he was quoted as saying.
