Central Bank of Iceland appoints new chairman

The Central Bank of Iceland has appointed Davi Oddsson governor and chairman of the Board of Governors. The move followed Birgir sleifur Gunnarsson's decision to retire.

The Prime Minister has agreed to his request, a Central Bank of Iceland press release said. Birgir sleifur Gunnarsson will be seventy in July 2006 and would have been obliged to retire no later than at the end of that month.

Following the announcement of Mr. Birgir sleifur Gunnarsson's retirement as Chairman of the Board of Governors of the Central Bank of Iceland, the Prime Minister of Iceland has appointed Mr. Davi Oddsson Governor and Chairman of the Board of Governors of the Central Bank of Iceland effective from October 20, 2005. Currently Minister for Foreign Affairs, Davi Oddsson served as Prime Minister from 1991 to 2004 and as Mayor of Reykjavik prior to that.
