Bank of Mexico and Amazon to co-operate on mobile payments system

Central bank aims to tackle low banking levels through digital payments

Bank of Mexico

The Bank of Mexico and US online retailer Amazon are in talks to launch a new mobile payments platform.

The system would allow consumers to use QR codes to pay for online purchases. This would be the first time Amazon offers this scanning technology in Mexico, according to Reuters.

The Bank of Mexico’s director of operations and payments, Jaime Cortina, told the news agency that Amazon had said it could implement the system “relatively quickly”. Cortina did not respond to a request for comment
