Lagarde to step down from ECB
President announces planned departure in February 2027
Christine Lagarde today (October 29) announced that she would be stepping down as president of the European Central Bank in February 2027.
In a statement, the ECB said Lagarde had informed the central bank’s governing council and the president of the European Council, António Costa, of her decision.
The ECB said her successor would be appointed by the European Council following a nomination process outlined in article 283 of the treaty on the functioning of the European Union.
