RBNZ chair resigns amid criticism of former governor’s exit

Finance minister says she would have asked Neil Quigley to quit if he had not stepped down

The chair of the board at the Reserve Bank of New Zealand (RBNZ) has stepped down amid criticism from the country’s finance minister over the bank’s handling of the resignation of its former governor in March. 

Neil Quigley resigned with immediate effect on August 29, according to a statement released that day by finance minister Nicola Willis.

In the statement, Willis thanked Quigley for his 15 years of service on the board, including nine years as chair, and said he left the RBNZ “well
