The Reserve Bank of New Zealand (RBNZ) said it experienced a “test of trust and confidence” following the resignations of its governor and board chair this year – a test that a former chair of the central bank’s board says it failed.

Acting governor Christian Hawkesby said in a speech today (September 11) that the RBNZ had been in the news for “too long” following the resignations of Adrian Orr as governor and Neil Quigley as board chair. Orr’s surprise resignation in March was followed by
