Bailey defends BoE’s internships for black applicants

Governor says internships are open to all, after politicians say programme is “discriminatory”

Andrew Bailey has defended the Bank of England’s internship programme for black applicants, after several politicians criticised the initiative for excluding white people.

In a letter to member of parliament (MP) Rupert Lowe on October 24, the BoE’s governor said its Black Future Leadership Sponsorship Programme was a “targeted initiative” designed to address the underrepresentation of black people applying for jobs at the central bank.
