US Supreme Court says Cook can stay for now

Experts say decision provides grounds for optimism ahead of final ruling in 2026

The US Supreme Court said on October 1 that Lisa Cook could remain in post as a Federal Reserve governor for the time being, despite president Donald Trump’s attempt to fire her.

The court will hear oral arguments from Trump and Cook in January before making its final decision.

Martin Flaherty, professor of law at Columbia University, says the court’s decision not to side with Trump was an exception to its usual practice and that Cook’s legal team should be cautiously optimistic.
