Ex-BdL governor released on bail after year in detention

Riad Salameh, former head of Lebanon’s central bank, was arrested over corruption allegations

The former governor of the Central Bank of Lebanon (BdL) has been released on bail after being held on charges of embezzlement and illicit enrichment.

Riad Salameh, who headed the BdL from 1993 to 2023, was freed on bail of $14 million and placed under a travel ban on September 26, according to reporting from Reuters and Associated Press.

The former governor was arrested in September 2024 for allegedly embezzling around $42 million in public funds and illicitly enriching himself by purchasing
