Colombian central bank governor defends constitutional arrangements amid attack from president

Colombia’s constitutional backing for monetary autonomy provides a sound foundation for sustainable growth, the governor of the Central Bank of Colombia (Banrep) has emphasised, after the country’s president put pressure on the bank to change policy.

Opening an event organised by the constitutional court yesterday (August 20), Leonardo Villar stressed that the Colombian constitution, signed in 1991, granted Banrep autonomy from the government and a clear mandate to pursue price stability.
