BNM: BR1M scheme was meant to target “deserving groups"

Malaysia’s central bank has sought to reassure the public over a government cash handouts scheme, as critics from the opposition say the aid is intended to buy votes ahead of a general election.

Bank Negara Malaysia said the ‘1Malaysia People’s Aid’ (BR1M) scheme was first “mooted” by its board of directors in a briefing with the prime minister back in 2011. The scheme was meant to help “deserving groups directly” following the government’s move to scale back subsidies.
