Sarb appeals to court in battle to defend mandate

Kganyago stresses public protector’s words have had a “serious and detrimental effect on the economy”

The South African Reserve Bank (Sarb) has taken legal action against the nation’s public protector, who has been calling for the central bank to have its mandate altered.

In an application to the high court on June 27, central bank governor Lesetja Kganyago argues Busisiwe Mkhwebane, the public protector, has no power to amend the constitution nor advise parliament to do so.
