Brazilian opposition candidate threatens central bank’s independence

The Central Bank of Brazil could lose its operational independence if José Serra, the presidential candidate for the opposition Brazilian Social Democratic Party (PSDB), is victorious in the October election.

Serra, a former health minister and governor of the state of São Paulo, told Roda Viva, a programme on Brazil's TV Cultura network, that under his leadership, rate-setting at the Brazilian central bank would be a "political process." Late last month, Serra also criticised the central bank
