Resolution planning needs to be broader and more intense – report

Strengthening capital alone will not prevent bank failures, Bretton Woods Committee finds

Monetary and supervisory authorities need to improve their lender-of-last-resort capabilities and improve how commercial lenders can be resolved, according to the Bretton Woods Committee.

Its new report examines the failures of Silicon Valley Bank (SVB) and Credit Suisse in March 2023, and the lessons that could be drawn by policy-makers. The report’s authors are Richard Berner, a professor of management practice at New York University’s department of finance and the co-director of the Stern
