‘There is agency’: experts say countries can deal with tariffs

‘Bad behaviour’ by US and China has brought many other nations together, speakers say

Countries on the receiving end of tariffs or other protectionist measures have offset the worst of the shock by developing alternative trade avenues, experts said on April 15.

“There is space, there is agency,” said Adam Posen, president of the Peterson Institute for International Economics, commenting on the ways countries had responded to “bad behaviour” by the US and China in using trade policy as a geopolitical weapon.

“The world is a worse place when the US disrupts the system,” Posen said
