IMF’s Gourinchas argues ‘middle powers’ can heal global trade

Co-operation by mid-sized economies could bring hegemons to table, chief economist says

International Monetary Fund chief economist Pierre-Olivier Gourinchas has argued that co-operation among “middle powers” – mid-sized economies with some geopolitical heft – could help heal a “rupturing global order”.

New research by Gourinchas and his colleagues at the IMF suggests a bloc of middle powers that deepened trade ties between themselves could become economically powerful enough to tempt hegemonic powers – the US and China – back into free trade deals.
