Most Australians think higher rates cause inflation – RBA poll
Bank says widespread popular misconceptions illustrate need for improved communications
More than half of people surveyed by the Reserve Bank of Australia believe higher interest rates lead to increased inflation.
The RBA survey, the results of which were published on July 22, found that 59% of respondents believed tighter policy would cause inflation to rise. Only 27% believed the opposite, while the remainder were unsure.
Most respondents also held incorrect views of the impact tighter policy would have on the exchange rate and asset prices, according to both the RBA’s definitions
