Former BoE MPC member warns central banks will struggle to combat inflation given fiscal pressures
An era of mounting fiscal pressures driven by ageing populations and rising public debt will erode central banks’ ability to set monetary policy independently, Charles Goodhart has said.
The founding member of the Bank of England’s monetary policy committee and emeritus professor at the London School of Economics (LSE) told a book launch at the LSE on June 17 that “what is happening in government debt markets is going to constrain central banks and reduce their freedom of action to undertake
