Trump’s trade policy a ‘wildcard’, says Bostic

Atlanta Fed president says tariffs picture is “unsettled” and calls for patience on monetary policy

The head of the Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta has described US president Donald Trump’s trade policy as a “wildcard”. 

In an article on the bank’s website on June 3, Raphael Bostic said the picture was “unsettled right now, with large tariffs applied to some countries and sectors, and potentially larger and broader tariffs looming at the end of cooling-off periods”.  

He added that if most of the levies were short-lived and led to agreements that lowered tariff levels among the country’s trading
