Honduran banknote to honour murdered activist
Berta Cáceres, who was killed in 2016, has been declared a “national hero”
The Honduran congress has directed the central bank to place an image of Berta Cáceres, an indigenous environmental activist killed six years ago, on the 200 lempira banknote. The provision is part of a measure naming the slain campaigner a “national hero”.
The note will also carry the phrase, “Despierta, despierta humanidad, ya no hay tiempo” – “Wake up, humanity, there is no more time” – referring to her speech accepting the Goldman Prize for environmental activism in 2015.
